GIS & Map-Making Basics
Work with geographic data in free GIS software: coordinate systems, vector and raster layers, simple spatial analysis and clear, honest maps.
- Planned 21 days
- About 1 h per day
- 6 planned modules
This course is in development and not yet available for purchase. The planned curriculum below is a draft and may change before launch.
Overview
A short, beginner-friendly introduction to geographic information systems, about three weeks at an hour a day, using free software. You learn what spatial data is, how coordinate reference systems and projections work, the difference between vector and raster data, how to load, clean and join geographic data, how to run simple spatial queries such as buffers and points-in-polygons, how to design a readable map, and how to communicate geographic findings while respecting location privacy. The project is a documented map and spatial analysis of a sample dataset.
What you will be able to do
- Explain vector and raster data and choose between them
- Work with coordinate reference systems without misaligning layers
- Load, clean and join geographic data
- Run simple spatial queries and analysis
- Design clear, honest maps
- Communicate geographic findings and protect location privacy
Before you start
- Basic spreadsheet skills
